What is Dog Ear Swelling?

Swollen ears, also known as ear hematoma, occurs when a blood vessel in the ear ruptures. Usually, they form under the skin and are common on dogs’ ears. Doctors often treat hematomas with fluid draining or surgeries. The swelling may cover part or all of the ear flap.

Symptoms Of Hematomas In Dogs

• Head shaking
• Redness and swelling of the ear canal
• Pain
• Itchiness
• Discoloration
• Odor
• Scratching at the affected ear
• Crusting or scabs in the ears

Causes Of Hematomas In Dogs

• Injury to the ear canal
• Foreign bodies
• Allergies
• Wax buildup
• Excessive cleaning
• Endocrine disorders

 Treatment

• Warm Compress

A warm compress can reduce pain, inflammation, irritation and redness in a dog’s ear. A dog owner can do this simply by dipping a small towel in warm water.

• Mullein and Garlic

Garlic and mullein have antibiotics, antimicrobial and antiviral properties. Create a mixture of equal parts mullein oil and garlic oil. To apply, place a few drops into the ear canal and gently massage the ear.

• Oil ear cleaner 

Oil ear cleaner has antimicrobial, antibacterial and antiviral properties. To make the mixture, combine one-ounce neem oil, one teaspoon tea tree oil, 1/2 ounce mullein or olive oil and 1/2 teaspoon of eucalyptus oil. Every day, apply a few drops of the oil mixture into the ear canal and massage the ear to spread.

Note: It is important to follow your veterinarian’s instructions closely and  It is especially important that you finish the full course of your dog’s medication, even if your dog appears to be getting better.
