Ascites in dogs is an abnormal buildup of fluid in the abdomen. It is also called abdominal effusion.

There are many possible medical conditions in dogs that would cause such a buildup, and even though it can be treated, it’s likely to return if the underlying condition remains.

Cause of ascites in dogs:

The most common causes of ascites in dogs include but not limited to the following health conditions: hypoproteinaemia, left-sided heart failure, congestive heart failure, cirrhosis, hepatic diseases, renal diseases, ancylostomosis and bacterial infection such as tuberculosis.

Cause of ascites in details,diseases of the organs, parasites, heart problems, or blood and blood vessel issues can all cause blood and fluid to leak into the abdominal cavity.

Here are a few possible medical problems that are known to cause ascites in dogs:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Coughing
  • diarrhoea
  • Lethargy
  • Weakness
  • Fever

Diagnosis:

on the basis of sign and symptoms, some test are required for conferm the ascites are

1.serum biochemistry and ascites fluid analysis.

2.sonopraphy and chest xray

Treatment of ascites in dogs may provide relief from the symptoms of fluid build up, but vets also need to treat the underlying cause, or else ascites is likely to return.

Abdominocentesis is one possible therapy a vet might use. It involves manually removing some fluid by tapping the abdomen, which provides relief from pain.

Some medicine or diet control is necessary for ascites in dogs, give sodium free diet,protein in diet, if liver issue occur then give silybin and adinosyl, diuretic, and fluid to improve the circulatory volume, while other conditions may require surgery, chemotherapy and other extensive treatment, give oxygen therapy in case of improper breathing.
