Causes of itching in dogs

Fleas are less dangerous but equally uncomfortable. Such infections can cause severe itching and a skin reaction, sometimes requiring veterinary care. Some dogs may be allergic to flea bites that cause very painful hot spots, hair loss, inflammation and even infection. If you check regularly, they are sometimes easier to tick, but in long-coated and darker dogs you may need some extra help. If you are working with a flea business, brush through your dog’s coat with a clean flea comb. Flea dirt can be seen in your dog or its most common resting areas such as beds and boxes.\

Today, allergy is the most common cause of itching. But the challenge is this: what is your dog allergic to? And, once that substance is identified, what is the best way to treat it? It is common to start with an allergy pill such as antihistamines (such as cetirizine or hydroxyzine), prednisone (steroids) and shampoos. Sometimes, one of these solutions is a magic tonic. If itching is not resolved by these methods, more intensive work needs to be done.

Treatment

Dogs with allergies usually have secondary skin infections – either bacterial or yeast in origin. It is quite likely that the dog will need to stay on antibiotics, antifungals (for yeast) or special shampoos for six weeks. If these infections are not treated, itching will persist even if the cause of itching is gone.

If regular lab work is normal, and medications, flea control, and diet do not fix the problem, one of two tasks can be done. If there are persistent skin lesions, they can be biopsied and cultured. In doing so, your veterinarian will look for atypical forms of autoimmune diseases, resistant infections, or standard diseases. In some cases, if the vet suspects something abnormal, he may perform these biopsies even before trying the above.
